WINNIPEG — Some managers in Manitoba’s civil service are being laid off this week as the government acts to hold the line on spending.
Premier Brian Pallister says he is following through on a plan announced last month to trim 112 management jobs while working to preserve front-line positions.

Pallister says some people are retiring while others are being laid off.
He says the 112 cuts are all within core government operations and more jobs will be cut in Crown corporations.
The Progressive Conservative government inherited an $846-million deficit when it was elected in April and has promised to balance the books within eight years.
Pallister has also said he is hoping to control public-sector salaries and has opened the door to a possible wage freeze.
