According to Oregon’s Forest Grove Police Department’s crime blotter, a verbal altercation broke out after a woman apparently told a man to “shut up” after he was whistling the nearly 18-year-old song near her driveway.

Speaking with Time magazine, Captain Mark Herb said police responded to reports of a “jack-ass guy” whistling the one-hit wonder.

“It’s not clear if the caller would have been more or less upset if it was a different genre or whether it was just the talent lacking in the whistling,” Herb told Time.

Herb told the magazine the apparent Semisonic fan had continued on his way by the time officers responded to the alleged annoyance. However, police eventually caught up with the man who was still whistling the tune.

The magazine reported officers chatted with the man who said he was upset over being told to shut up. Officers sent the man on his way and apparently he “whistled his way back home.”
