Marvin Rotrand quits Union Montreal and backs Applebaum

MONTREAL – Marvin Rotrand, the dean of city council and representative from Snowdon, is the ninth city councillor to quit Union Montréal and the latest in a wave of councillors to leave the party in the wake of Mayor Gérald Tremblay’s resignation.

“I took this decision after evaluating what I think is best for the city council as an institution,” Rotrand said in a news release.

Rotrand also confirmed that he has thrown his support behind Michael Applebaum, who he noted would be best suited to deal with the changes needed.

Those three resignations bring the Union members of council down to 26 on the 64-member city council.

Vision Montreal spokespersons said their members are in meetings about whom to support.

Alan DeSousa, a Union supporter of Deschamps, said he prefers Deschamps over former Union colleague and now independent candidate Micheal Applebaum because he thinks Deschamps is more “collegial.”

The deadline for nominations for interim mayor is 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The councillors will vote Friday to select a new interim mayor.
