West Vancouver residents have elected Peter Lambur, an urban planner and architect, to district council after a by-election on Saturday.
Lambur won with 1,262 votes, 323 more than runner-up Andy Krawczyk.
The election was called after three-term councillor Michael Lewis died of lung cancer at age 66 in August.
Lambur’s platform was centred on community and neighbourhood character, including improving housing affordability, creating more “sensible development” by cutting back on rezoning policies, building a renewed Official Community Plan, and improving public engagement.
He has also stated his opposition to big development in key hubs like the Park Royal area, until traffic woes are addressed.
The Ambleside resident’s resume includes planning work across the country. In B.C., he helped plan the station locations for the SkyTrain Millennium Line project and is currently acting director of design for the new Emily Carr University of Art + Design campus under construction in Vancouver.
In West Van, he has served on the Mayor’s Strategic Planning Working Group and is current vice-chair of the Community Engagement Committee.
An unofficial total of 5,163 votes were tallied in the election. Official results will be posted on Nov. 23.
