3 children found ‘living amongst drug trafficking paraphernalia’ in Grande Prairie bust

Three children were found living inside a northwest Alberta home – alongside drug trafficking paraphernalia, cocaine and a loaded, unsecure shotgun – when police searched the property in connection with a drug investigation earlier this week.

The children’s parents, a 31-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, were among seven people who were arrested after members of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) searched four Grande Prairie homes on Nov. 16.

The following items were seized by police from inside the homes:

  • A loaded handgun with serial number defaced
  • Two shotguns
  • 253 grams of cocaine
  • 6 grams of heroin
  • 78 grams of crack cocaine
  • 14 grams of methamphetamine
  • 40 grams of marijuana
  • $6,695 cash proceeds of crime

Seven people were arrested and charged with 38 offences in relation to the drug bust.

John Wilson, 27, was charged with possession of a restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, tampering with a firearm serial number, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of careless storage of a firearm and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Lydia Dafoe, 26, was charged with possession of a restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, tampering with a firearm serial number and careless storage of a firearm.

Karman Singh Grewal, 19, was charged with two counts of possession of drugs, possession of proceeds of crime and three counts of breach of recognizance, which stem from a previous ALERT investigation that took place in October 2016.

Ronjot Sing Dhami, 23, was charged with two counts of possession of drugs and possession of proceeds of crime.

Allen Connal, 32, was charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possession of drugs and possession of proceeds of crime.

ALERT said the three young children were placed in the care of a family member. Police said the parents’ names will not be released to protect the identification of the kids.
