The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is looking for key witnesses of a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place at a Canadian Tire store in Vancouver last week.

The incident took place at around 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, at the store near Rupert Street and Grandview Highway.

Vancouver Police officers responded to a call of an alleged robbery in progress.

When officers arrived, they confronted a man, who was later identified as 38-year-old Daniel Peter Rintoul, originally from Alberta.

Police say Rintoul, who was dressed in camouflage, allegedly stabbed a store clerk in the back and across the neck and began taking guns from the store cabinets. He then abandoned the weapons and began walking toward the exit. On his way out, the accused grabbed a customer, an 82-year-old man, and held him hostage.

Investigators claim he then came out of the Canadian Tire exit holding the man at knifepoint. Police confronted the suspect and tried to arrest him. At that point, Rintoul allegedly stabbed a police officer multiple times in the head and abdomen.

Police shot at the suspect and he soon died from his injuries.

Rintoul is known to police and has been residing in Vancouver for a year or two.

IIO says CCTV video footage of the scene has revealed a number of key witnesses who were filming the incident outside the store from nearby coffee and retail shops. The IIO is looking to speak with these witnesses and anyone else who saw the man’s interaction with police outside of the Canadian Tire.

The IIO is also seeking any video footage of the incident that may have already been provided to the Vancouver Police, the media or posted online. The office says they need to independently acquire any witness accounts or video footage, and that’s why they are appealing to the public to speak with them even if they have already spoken with the Vancouver Police.
