There was a heavy police presence in multiple Calgary neighbourhoods this weekend, in relation to an ongoing investigation into the death of a Calgary man.

Police said officers were called to respond to reports of gunshots being fired in the community of Forest Lawn at around 5 a.m. Friday, where a man in his 20s was found dead inside a home.

Family members have identified the victim as 23-year-old Abiem Kuol Akel, who grew up in Calgary after immigrating from South Sudan.

Police said several men were seen running from the home and leaving in a four-door sedan.

Officers set up a mobile command centre in the northeast community of Taradale late Friday night, as well as an armoured vehicle and a tactical unit.

Following a lengthy standoff with police, three men were arrested in relation to the incident.

Police said they are considered persons of interest in connection with the death of Akel. They said at this time, no charges have been laid.

On Saturday morning, two police vehicles remained at the condominium complex on Taralake Way N.E. and officers were also going door to door in the community of Dover.

Police said they are currently searching in both Forest Lawn and Dover for any evidence that may assist with the ongoing investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled for early next week.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
