What does Remembrance Day mean to you?

It’s the one day a year that I really take the time to reflect on certain things and certain people. It’s the day to reflect on my life and on the life of my comrades.

Why did you enlist in the military?

I always wanted to be in the army. Since I was two or three. I’m a first generation Canadian and I wanted to give back to the country.

What does it mean to serve your country?

There’s pride but you also have to stay humble. Just because you’ve served it doesn’t make you special. You volunteered to serve your country and it’s your job to exemplify the Canadian values.

What’s life like now that you have finished serving?

I retired in 2014 and I was already campaigning for the election. As a politician even at the city level, 50 per cent of my motivation is to help veterans and 50 per cent is to serve my country.

What do you like about politics?

I was looking for a way to keep serving. Politics is service to your country.
