OTTAWA – Prime Minister Trudeau has spoken with American president elect Donald Trump and invited him to visit Canada.
The Prime Minister’s Office says the two men spoke yesterday, hours after Trump’s stunning election win.
The PMO says they re-iterated the importance of the relationship between Canada and the US and discussed various areas of mutual interest, but did not elaborate.
The PMO says Trudeau invited Trump to visit Canada at the earliest opportunity and the president-elect offered Trudeau a similar invitation to visit Washington.

Trudeau’s policies on accepting refugees and promoting trade differ from Trump’s denounciation of trade deals and a vow to build a wall on the border with Mexico.
But during the American election Trudeau resolutely refused to publicly denounce Trump, promising to work with whoever won the presidency.
Trudeau was also the only member of his government speaking publicly about Trump’s win, requests for comment from several ministers’ offices were referred to the Prime Minister’s Office.
