Prom Queen: The Musical is having its world premiere at the Segal Centre Thursday and actor Alessandro Costantini couldn’t be more excited.
“I play Marc Hall, who is the young man who took the Catholic school to court in 2002 for the right to take his boyfriend to prom,” Costantini said.
“It’s the story of this young man who was just fighting for equality and, at the time, he didn’t know it would turn into this big human rights campaign.”
Hall was a student at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School of the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) in Oshawa, Ont.
His school principal had refused to allow him to bring his boyfriend to the big end-of-year celebration.
The case created waves across Canada and gained international attention.
On the day of the prom, Justice Robert McKinnon issued an injunction that would allow Hall to bring his boyfriend as his date.
In 2005, Hall dropped the case against the school board, citing that he did not have a desire to go through the legal system for many years.
