Home security footage released by the Brevard County Sheriff’s office shows a break-in and robbery of a home in Rockledge, Fla., last Saturday – all while the occupants of the house were home and asleep.

The video shows one of the alleged thieves creeping just feet from where two young children are fast asleep.

“My wife, she’s still shaking,” homeowner Al Vera told News 6 Orlando. “When I saw [the video], my jaw dropped.”

According to police, the break-in occurred early Saturday at around 1:30 a.m. Police said two men forced their way into the home on Matthew Drive, with one remaining outside with a handgun while the other went looking through the home for valuables.

At one point, the man stops just feet from where Vera’s grandchildren, ages 10 and 13, are fast asleep. After a moment’s consideration, he snatches one of the children’s mobile phones.

In addition, the robbers made off with Vera’s .38 calibre pistol, a GPS system, and several credit cards.

“[The kids] were all in the living room sleeping, and he just walks right around in between them. My bedroom is right over there. He was right there, but he never opened the door,” Vera said.

“God forbid, what could’ve happened if one of us got up?”

The man seen rummaging through the house is described by police as early 20s, between 5 foot 10 and 6 feet tall, with black hair. He wore a striped shirt, fingerless gloves, and light-coloured pants.

The other man was seen wearing a beanie, dark jacket, and khakis.

While police are on the lookout for the two men, Vera said he believes there may have been more suspects who broke into his car.

“There’s like, three guys going through the car while he’s inside the house,” Vera said. “They’re ransacking the car still.”

Police are asking anyone with more information to come forward. In the meantime, Vera said he’s changed the locks on his doors and installed more outdoor lights in an effort to prevent any future break-ins.
