A 56-year old Italian man has been acquitted of charges related to a bizarre case of bus shelter vandalism.
Last week, Leonardo Autera took the stand in his own defence and told the court through his translator he would never allow himself to do it.
On Monday, the trial judge acquitted Autera of two charges: mischief and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.
Autera testified he came from Italy and lived with Cynthia Zambrano. The couple was working on a photography project, taking pictures of people at bus stops.

In February, Edmonton police were investigating more than 70 damaged bus shelters. Autera and Zambrano had been charged in connection with damage to one shelter along 50 Street and 140 Avenue.
During Autera’s trial, a police officer testified he heard a loud bang and saw a couple drive past the broken glass in the bus shelter. The constable didn’t see what caused the damage, but after he pulled the couple over he told the court he found a slingshot and marbles in their vehicle.
Last week, 38-year old Zambrano pleaded guilty to mischief but admitted she was involved in seven other bus shelter vandalisms. Her lawyer is seeking a conditional discharge. She is due back in court for sentencing in January.
