WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Police Board is recommending Danny Smyth as the next chief for the Winnipeg police.
The board made the announcement Monday at a media conference. Danny Smyth was in attendance and said he is “honoured” to be recommended for the position.
“It is not lost on me that I am the first chief the board has selected… I am humbled,” Smyth said.
“I look forward to working with the board to further advance the goals and priorities of this service.”
Smyth has worked with the Winnipeg police for more than 30 years, and currently serves as deputy chief of investigative services.
“I look forward to continued community engagement,” Smyth said. “Healthy engagement with the community is vital for our service, and getting to know the people that make up our diverse neighbourhoods enables us to better understand the problems they are confronted with.”
Former police chief, Devon Clunis served in the role since November 2012, after spending 25 years with the Winnipeg police. He retired in July of 2016.

The board will receive the recruitment committee’s recommendation and make the formal appointment of Smyth’s position at its public meeting Nov. 4. He will then officially takes his oath of office after being sworn in at a public ceremony planned for Nov. 8.
