Homicide detectives investigating suspicious death near Fox Drive

Homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a young man after police were called Saturday night to a river valley nature area in southwest Edmonton.

Officers responding to a “trouble not known” 911 call at around 8:30 p.m. arrived at the Alfred H. Savage Centre to find a dead 19-year-old man.

A 21-year-old man who was in the area was taken into custody but as of late Sunday morning no charges had been laid.

Police said they believe the suspect and victim knew each other.

The area parking lot was blocked off with police tape, and a section of Fox Drive near Whitemud Drive was also closed while police investigated. Motorists traveling in the area described a heavy police presence.

The Alfred H. Savage Centre is a warm up facility with washrooms near the Fox Drive staircase and Whitemud Creek, and is popular with outdoor enthusiasts.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
