4 people arrested after assaulting victim with shotgun and BB gun, Winnipeg police say

WINNIPEG — Four people have been charged in connection to an assault involving a loaded shot gun and viciously assaulting a man.

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, a 24-year-old man attended a house in the 600 block of Cathedral Avenue, where a group was socializing.

“It was at this time multiple suspects produced weapons preventing the victim from leaving,” police said in a media release.

The man was forced to the ground and the suspects shot a BB style gun multiple times at the man, police said. They also pointed a shotgun at him, which was not fired. He was then robbed of various personal items.

The suspects then restrained the man and over a period of time he was viciously assaulted, causing many injuries, police said.

The suspects drove the man north of the city, leaving him injured and “inappropriately dressed for the weather,” police added.

The victim managed to get to a nearby business and call police. The 24-year-old was taken to hospital and treated for numerous injuries. He is now in stable condition.

On Wednesday, around 6 a.m., police conducted a traffic stop near the 600 block of Cathedral, where the assault took place. They took three men into custody. After searching their vehicle, police seized drugs, a loaded modified shotgun and property belonging to the victim.

Police also used their armoured rescue vehicle (ARV1) to help with the arrests.

Leopoldo Aqunio, 40, Reginald Desjarlais, 26, Wade Hoholhauser, 24, and Amber Roberts, 31,  have been charged with numerous offences due to their alleged involvement. Some of which include:

  • Forcible confinement.
  • Armed robbery using a restricted or prohibited firearm.
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm.
  • Assault with a weapon.
  • Pointing a firearm .
  • Overcome resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle another person.
  • Several drug related offences.
