Vancouver Fire and Rescue thanks some everyday heroes

The number of people who put their lives on the line every day to help keep us safe are giving a big thank you today to a number of citizen heroes.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services has handed out commendations to then members of the public who put their own needs aside to help someone in a crisis.

The heroes included a person who rushed to help a pedestrian who was struck and others who administered naloxone to someone suffering an overdose.

Also in attendance was a person whose life was saved after suffering a heart attack during a basketball game.

“He was actually about, maybe six feet away from me when he collapsed,” said recipient Lanzer Permalino. “I knew right then and there that something was going on at the time so I was able to delegate people and get the necessary tools to help this gentleman.”

The person Permalino saved, Bernabe Santos, said nurses and doctors told him Permalino is the reason he is alive today.
