2 teens charged in deadly stabbing of 15-year-old Toronto boy

Two teenagers have been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of 15-year-old Kareem Deerr during a fight near a Toronto-area mall.

Toronto police responded to a report of an altercation between two groups of people at the Scarborough Centre RT Station, near the Scarborough Town Centre mall at Brimley Road and Progress Avenue, around 9:20 p.m. Sept. 23.

Police discovered Deerr wounded at the scene and paramedics rushed him to hospital in life-threatening condition. He later died of his injuries.

Desmond Lincoln Williams, 18, of Toronto, was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree murder.

A 14-year-old boy, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was also arrested Thursday and charged with manslaughter.

Both suspects are scheduled to appear in a Toronto court Friday morning.

Police are also investigating the stabbing of a second teenage boy near the same mall, less than 24 hours after Deerr was killed.

Emergency crews responded to the YMCA on Town Centre Court, west of McCowan Road, just after 8 p.m. Saturday after a large fight occurred.

A 17-year-old was taken to hospital in serious, but non-life-threatening condition.

The second stabbing occurred shortly after friends and family gathered near the TTC station to remember Deerr.

Const. David Hopkinson told Global News Sunday it was too early to determine if the two incidents were connected.

An online fundraising campaign set up by Deerr’s family to raise money for his funeral said he was the youngest in his family and his mother’s “baby boy.”
