A woman has been convicted and fined for a health information privacy breach while she was working at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

The breach between November 2013 and March 2014 was discovered when Alberta Health Services conducted database audits.

The audits found Judy Anderson had snooped in the files of 26 people — some of them shared her last name, while others did not appear to have any connection to where she worked.

Anderson was responsible for entering and confirming data relating to newborns with congenital irregularities.

The breach was reported to the privacy commissioner’s office before coming before the courts.

Anderson pleaded guilty in provincial court and last week was fined $5,000.
