Saskatoon police chief receives gold medal from lieutenant governor of Sask.

The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) chief received a prestigious award from Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Schofield during a ceremony at the Government House on Tuesday.

Clive Weighill was selected by a non-profit organization, Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC), to be the 2016 recipient of the Gold Medal for Excellence in Public Administration in Saskatchewan.

“We are very pleased to be providing this honour to Chief Weighill given his commitment to partnering with the community and implementing innovative policing practices in the City of Saskatoon,” said Fabian Contreras, IPAC Saskatchewan regional group.

IPAC Saskatchewan awards the gold medal annually to recognize the exceptional achievement of those who have shown distinctive leadership in public administration in the province.

Weighill has served as a police officer in the province for over four decades. During his time with the Regina Police Service he worked in many areas, including 10 years as deputy chief.

In 2006, he became chief of police in Saskatoon. IPAC said, during his tenure, the SPS underwent a remarkable transformation from a demoralized organization to one with high morale, despite the inherent stresses of police work.

Weighill was elected the president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police in 2014.
