Royal ready: how to prepare for Will and Kate’s Okanagan visit

Royal ready: how to prepare for Will and Kate’s Okanagan visit – Sep 20, 2016

With just days before the Duke and Duchess’ royal arrival in the Okanagan there are some big questions from those hoping to meet the prestigious pair.

How do I act? What should I wear?

So we went right to the source: royal expert Jamie Samhan.

Samhan lives in Kelowna and is one of just two Canadian correspondents for Royal Central, a UK-based publication touted as the largest independent source for news about the royal family.

She’ll be covering the royal visits in Vancouver and Kelowna.

Her advice if you’re hoping to meet the royals: get to UBC Okanagan early and be willing to wait. It’ll be the public’s best chance to see Will and Kate.

How should you act?

“Don’t extend your hand to shake their hand unless they offer [theirs] first.” said Samhan.

“You don’t have to bow or curtsy. That’s strictly for British citizens.”

The daily email you need for 's top news stories.

And her biggest tip: “Just be yourself. They’re so used to people being shy and intimidated of them.”

“They just want to have conversations and get to know people.”

What should you wear?

According to Samhan there is no dress code. She’s purchased a fascinator for the royal events (why not, right?)

Her suggestion is to take a look at the weather forecast and decide from there. You can dress up, but remember you will be outside.

“A lot of people are going to want to look nice, because it’s Kate and she’s a fashion icon,” said Samhan.

“She probably won’t be judging you on your outfit.”

The royal couple will be coming to the Okanagan without Prince George and Princess Charlotte. They will be in Kelowna at UBC Okanagan and in West Kelowna at Mission Hill Winery for an invite-only event.
