Impaired driver in Whitby, Ont. wakes up and ‘immediately’ crashes into cruiser: police

A 34-year-old Ajax, Ont. man has been charged with impaired driving and drug offences after police said he was found asleep at the wheel on the side of the road before he woke up and “immediately” crashed into a police cruiser.

Durham Regional Police responded to a 911 call after a grey Ford Mustang was seen driving erratically in the Thickson Road South area of Whitby, Ont.

Officers then located the car parked on the side of Nichol Avenue, where police said the driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel.

An officer then knocked on the driver’s side window and police said the man “awoke and immediately drove forward,” slamming into a cruiser directly in front of him.

Khizar Bilal has been charged with impaired driving by drug, driving while under suspension and possession of cocaine after an unknown quantity of drugs were seized in the car. He was later released with bail conditions.
