The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after two separate shootings in Calgary Saturday afternoon.
Acting Chief Trevor Daroux confirmed at a press conference Saturday night, having two officer-related shootings so close together in time and proximity is a rare occurrence in Calgary.
Police do not believe the incidents are related to each other.
According to a press release, the first incident began around 1:00 p.m. MT when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the Blackfoot Truckstop at the 1800 block of 9 Avenue S.E.
Daroux said the male driver was acting suspicious as the officer was approaching the vehicle. The officer reported noticing a rifle on the seat next to the driver and told the driver not to move.
Police said the driver put the vehicle in reverse and attempted to take off, at which point the officer discharged his/her firearm.
Daroux said the vehicle traveled about 40 metres before hitting a gas line, which is when the driver jumped out of the vehicle and took off on foot.

Police said another officer chased the man down and was able to apprehend him. A female who was reportedly in the vehicle was also taken into custody. Charges are pending against both the man and woman.
The male driver suffered minor injuries, believed to be from broken glass. He was treated in hospital and released.
The Blackfoot Truckstop was evacuated due to the gas leak and road closures were temporarily put in place.
Daroux said the officer who discharged his firearm has been with the Calgary Police Service for 20 years.
ASIRT is investigating both incidents as is protocol in any weapons related incident involving an officer.
