Calgary police have confirmed an officer is in stable condition after sustaining a “severe injury” in an altercation at Marlborough Mall in Calgary Saturday afternoon.
The incident began shortly after 2:10 p.m. MT. One witness told Global News she was first aware of a problem when she heard shouting from a nearby CTrain station, and noticed a man who appeared to have a large knife fighting with a number of people.
“I was coming off of the bus to go on the train and I saw an altercation and all of a sudden a guy was chasing some people with a knife and ran into the mall and a bunch of cops showed up. Not really sure what happened after that but there was a guy with a big knife and he was chasing people,” Kayla Perrin said.

In a news release Saturday, police said they received a call about that incident and responded to the area.

According to Acting Chief Trevor Daroux, an officer was in the parking lot of Marlborough Mall when he noticed a man matching the description of the suspect from the LRT incident hiding behind a dumpster, and attempted to speak with him.
At a press conference Saturday night, police said the man ran into the mall and the officer chased after him.
Daroux said at one point the man turned to the officer and the officer attempted to taser him but was unsuccessful.

According to Daroux an altercation ensued between the man and the officer where the man produced a large-bladed weapon and injured the officer. Daroux said the officer responded by discharging his weapon.
Daroux could not confirm whether the alleged large-bladed weapon involved was a machete as witnesses had reported.
During and after the incident a portion of the mall was evacuated, and an area near the north end of the mall near Sears and Kal Tire was cordoned off with police tape.
Both the man and the officer were taken to hospital where they are now in stable condition.
According to Daroux, the officer involved in this incident has been with the Calgary Police for two years.
ASIRT is investigating as is protocol in any weapons related incident involving an officer.
