Four outages in less than two weeks left around 4,500 Toronto homes without power beginning in late August. The latest outage last week forced many tenants of CityPlace condos to toss away the contents of their fridge and now some are seeking compensation from Toronto Hydro.

“Our claims department is going through [the claims] right now in good faith but we have an investigation going on down there in terms of the cause of multiple outages,” said Tori Gass, spokesperson for Toronto Hydro, adding claims may likely only be paid out if the investigation concludes that Hydro was at fault.

“What would have to happen was that our investigation into these outages would have to show that there was some sort of negligence.”

Local city councillor Joe Cressy is encouraging residents to seek compensation.

“When you have a scenario where four power outages in the span of a week and a half, I think it’s fair to assume that if you were inconvenienced you should receive some compensation,” he said.

It’s unclear how long the investigation will take and Hydro could not say how many residents have filed claims against them. In the meantime they’re encouraging residents to check their home owner and tenants’ insurance first, as many will cover costs related to fridge contents.

“Certainly this area has been hard hit recently, and it has not been a good situation,” said Brian Buchan, Toronto’s Hydro’s Director of Communications and Municipal Stakeholder Relations.

He added that a recent thunderstorm added to the delays in restoring power during the most recent outage last week, which lasted from about midnight Wednesday to around 7:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
