The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says a man arrested by Calgary police in July suffered broken ribs and a collapsed right lung. The details came Tuesday, three days after the Calgary Police Service announced it has relieved two officers of their duties and assigned two others to administrative duties in relation to the incident.
The incident happened July 30 at around 8:50 p.m. when an officer followed a white SUV “with an obscured licence plate” into a parking lot and turned on the police vehicle’s emergency lights for a traffic stop. Police previously said it happened near the 6700 block of Macleod Trail S.

The driver got out of his SUV and was chased by the officer, who was joined by other officers who’d been called in to help, ASIRT said Tuesday.
The 34-year-old man was found a short distance away and arrested, however, due to the serious injuries sustained during the arrest, CPS notified the Alberta Director of Law Enforcement.
ASIRT’s investigation continues and the watchdog will not release further information at this time, a statement said Tuesday.
