Pointe-Claire canoeists head to national championships in Dartmouth, N.S.

A team of 47 Pointe-Claire canoeists made it past the August provincial championships to compete in the national competition.

“Time after time, we’re proud to be represented by such talented and dedicated athletes,” Mayor Morris Trudeau said.

“It’s inspiring to see them perform in their sport and it’s exciting to know they’ll represent Pointe-Claire throughout Canada.”

About 70 Canoe Club athletes, including people of all ages, excelled and won first place at the Provincial Canoe-Kayak Championships in the M16, M17, M19, Open and Masters categories.

At the Sprint-Canoe Kayak Provincial Championships held at the Club Nautique in Sherbooke, 78 Pointe-Claire athletes in the M15, M13, and M11 categories reached second place.

The Pointe-Claire Canoe Club ranked first among the 12 clubs from across Quebec at the two competitions, which were attended by 600 athletes.

“These athletes spend an average of 15 hours a week on their discipline, depending on the season,” Trudeau said.

“They’re examples of perseverance and commitment and we also want to emphasize the support of the many volunteers and parents who make it possible to organize and hold these events.”

The Canadian Championships will be held in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3.
