UPDATE: The precautionary Water Quality Advisory has now been lifted.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan is telling vulnerable residents of two subdivision in the Westside Road area to boil their water.
The Water Quality Advisory impacts residents connected to the community water systems in Killiney Beach and Westshore.
“As a result of the ongoing power outages related to the Bear Creek fire, water quality may be compromised,” said spokesperson Bruce Smith in a media release.
“While the health risk is modest and no bacteria have been found in any of the water tested from the systems, Regional District staff recommends that as a precaution that Killiney Beach and Westshore water customers follow Interior Health guidelines, especially for those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, children and those wishing additional precautions.”
Officials say those vulnerable groups should boil any water they plan to consume for at least one minute. Vulnerable residents are being advised to also take those precautions with any water they use for brushing their teeth or making ice.
Additionally, residents are being asked to conserve water.
“Reservoirs are not able to be replenished as they would normally because of the power situation,” said Smith.
Over 1,650 BC Hydro customers in the Westside Road area have been without power since Sunday evening. The power outages are being blamed on trees falling down on electrical wires.
