A recent posting on an online job board brought dozens of people to a northeast Dollarama location Monday.

The discount chain is opening a new store at the East Hills Shopping Centre and the lineup at Madigan Plaza began before the doors opened.

Alberta currently has the third-lowest job vacancy rate in the country, according to Statistics Canada.

One prospective employee, Pat, spoke with Global News just after she left her interview. She said she was there two hours before the hiring fair opened and was fortunate enough to be hired.

Pat said she was very happy to get the job because the job market is still so bleak for all candidates, especially for someone who is mature.

“It’s very, very hard. It’s very tough. Especially, I’ll be honest, for my age. You know, I’ve actually had people that have turned around and said, ‘You’re a granny. You’re too old.’”

The Dollarama hiring fair runs Monday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 6060 Memorial Drive N.E.
