Thousands line up for jobs at the new Calgary airport terminal
WATCH ABOVE: Thousands of people spent hours waiting in line for about 300 jobs at the Calgary International Airport. As Global’s Gary Bobrovitz reports, it’s a sign on how though it is to get work in a slumping economy – Aug 17, 2016

Thousands of people looking for jobs at the new international terminal at the Calgary airport lined up outside a northeast hotel Friday.

There were also traffic jams surrounding the Coast Plaza Hotel as people jockeyed for parking spots.

The new terminal at YYC will be opening in late October, and hundreds of jobs – from gate to curb – have to be filled.

“Despite challenging economic times in the city, YYC continues to be at the centre of growth and opportunity for Calgary and the region,” said Garth Atkinson, president and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority.

“YYC already employs over 24,000 people in the community and is responsible for creating more than 48,000 jobs,” said Atkinson.

“The opening of the new terminal means more people will have the opportunity to join the growing business at YYC and become part of our world-renowned Team YYC.”

Several airport partners are taking part in a YYC Career Fair on Wednesday, August 17, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Coast Plaza Hotel (1316 33 St. N.E.).

Available positions include operations, customer service and food and retail.

The international terminal will add more than two million square feet to the existing terminal, along with 50 new retail and restaurant locations, when it opens October 31.

The Calgary Airport Authority said it will be Canada’s most technologically advanced terminal in the country.

Some applicants were less-than-impressed with the process, saying on social media that there has to be a better way than to have people line up for hours.
