More than $50,000 has been raised for the family of a pregnant woman struck and killed by an out-of-control car outside a Quebec City hospital.
Marie-Pier Gagne, 27, was 40 weeks pregnant when she died Wednesday. Miraculously, her baby survived.
The woman was crossing at a crosswalk when a vehicle careened out of control, hitting Gagne as well as two parked cars. It’s believed the driver of the vehicle experienced a medical emergency.
Quebec television host Chantal Lacroix, who has been in close contact with the family, said in a Facebook post Saturday that the newborn had suffered two fractures to her skull and a concussion in the collision that killed her mother.
The infant was transported to a Montreal hospital after her condition deteriorated; in a Facebook post a relative said the baby was being monitored but her condition was positive.

Since Gagne’s death more than $50,000 has been raised to help support her baby — a girl named Alexe — and the woman’s partner, Sylvain Lamy Bittner.
The online fundraising page has a goal of raising $55,000.
A service will be held for Gagne on Sunday, Aug. 21.
