Firefighters were called to the fire at a vacant building in the area of 149 Street and 97 Avenue at around 5:15 a.m.

“When we arrived on scene we had heavy smoke showing. We had 11 different fire trucks respond at this time and there were over 30 firefighters,” Gary Hoekstra, station captain with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, said.

“It was quite a stubborn fire to start with,” he continued. “The biggest problem was that these buildings are renovated over time so we had a couple different ceilings in the occupancy, so the main part was trying to get in there and pull the ceiling down and stop the fire extension from there.”

It took crews about 30 minutes to get the fire under control. No other buildings were damaged in the blaze.

“We were very concerned about the building to the north here. It’s a three-storey walk up, so we had the ladder set up and we had to make sure there was no extension into that,” Hoekstra said.
