For the second time in a week, first responders in Ontario sprung into action to remove a cup from a skunk’s head.
A North Bay police cruiser was on patrol on Monday when officers spotted the striped creature with a McDonald’s McFlurry cup on its face.
The actual encounter, which was captured on video and posted on social media, lasted for only a few seconds but the decision to intervene took a bit of convincing.
“Seriously, I would pull it off its face if I didn’t think it was going to spray me. Do you think it’s going to spray though?” Cst. Sarah Kavanagh is heard in the video speaking to her partner.
“No. I think it’s going to love you. I think it’s going to thank you and run away,” said Cst. Jennifer Dix. “That’s why it’s staying out here cause it knows someone can help it. It’s not going to the bush.”
Kavanagh is then seen in the video exiting the police cruiser and approaching the skunk.
“It’s two in the morning and Sarah is going to save a skunk,” Dix quipped.
After a near miss on the first attempt, Cst. Kavanagh managed to successfully remove the cup as the creature scurried away.
On Aug. 7, a Peel Region paramedic encountered a similar situation in which a first responder wore a protective suit to remove a cup from a skunk’s head. Video of the rescue went viral.
