Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan suffered a horrific elbow injury while competing in the men’s 77 kg clean and jerk on Wednesday.
Karapetyan had performed impressively during the snatch, lifting 174 kg – the second-best result among the competitors.
But on his third attempt at lifting 195 kg during the clean and jerk, his elbow bent backwards suddenly as he lifted the weight over his head.
Karapetyan dropped the weight behind him and left the stage screaming in pain, attended by coaches and medical staff.
Had he succeeded in lifting that weight, he would likely have beaten the bronze medallist, Mohamed Mahmoud of Egypt.
