Rio 2016: Canada’s newest swimming phenom Penny Oleksiak sets Canadian record at Rio

Canada’s Penny Oleksiak set a Canadian and world junior record at Rio Olympics Wednesday en route to qualifying for the women’s 100-metre freestyle finals.

The Toronto native finished second in her semifinal heat with a 52.72 seconds setting a Canadian record in the event, advancing her to the finals Thursday night.

The 16-year-old was 0.01 seconds behind Australia’s Cate Campbell who set an Olympic record.

Winnipeg’s Chantal Van Landeghem placed 10th overall in the semifinal and did not advance.

On Sunday, Oleksiak won silver in the 100-metre butterfly final just one day after helping the women’s team capture bronze in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay with teammates Sandrine Mainville, Chantal Van Landeghem and Taylor Ruck.
