Valois-Fortier fell to Japan’s Takanari Nagase in the repechage round Tuesday afternoon. In a lightning-fast move, Nagase tossed Valois-Fortier for an “ippon”: the “perfect throw” that wins the fight.

Valois-Fortier had lost a match to Russian Khasan Khalmurzaev in the quarter-finals and was fighting for a chance to get back into the competition – and possibly win a bronze medal.

He won the bronze in London, and was one of the top-ranked judoka in his weight class going into Rio. He has also won silver and bronze medals in the world championship.
