Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating the shooting of knife-wielding man in a suit by a police officer in downtown Toronto on Monday.
The Special Investigations Unit said the 39-year-old suspect stabbed a 66-year-old man around 5:30 a.m. near Yonge and Dundas before being confronted by officers on scene.
“Several shots were fired. The man was struck a number of times,” SIU spokesman Jason Gennaro told reporters on Monday.

Toronto EMS confirms the male was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The SIU said the suspect underwent surgery and is now listed in non-life threatening condition.
Gennaro also said the 66-year-old victim suffered a minor knife wound and has since been released from hospital.
The SIU later said it has designated one subject officer and four witness officers.
A witness told Global News the suspect, who was described as white, tall and wearing a suit, lunged at one of the officers before being shot.

Police said Dundas St. W. remains closed between Yonge St. and Bay St. for the investigation.
The 505 Dundas and 506 Carlton streetcars have also been diverted.
The SIU has assigned seven investigators and three forensic investigators as part of the investigation.
The organization is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports of death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault where police were involved.
