Over 100 firefighters were called to the scene of a four-alarm blaze on Wolfe Street in Montreal’s Gay Village Saturday morning.
The fire started on a roof-top terrace of a three-storey condo, Danny Ciavaglia, chief of operations with the Montreal fire department, said.
“The call came in at 9:45 this morning,” Ciavaglia said. “It started on the roof and then spread to the roof of an adjacent building.”
By noon Saturday, the fire was under control.
The Red Cross was at the scene to assist families in need of lodging.
It is unclear if or when, the affected residents will be able to return home.
Paramedics, treated three people at the scene for minor injuries including one firefighter and two members of one family.
A spokesperson for Urgences-Sante said that a man had been treated for very minor burns, while a woman was treated for shock.
While the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, Ciavalgia told Global News that the fire may have been caused by a barbecue.
“It was probably a barbecue,” Ciavalglia said. “But it is not confirmed.”
Just last week, the fire prevention unit tweeted out grilling safety tips, reminding residents to use caution when grilling out.
Some of the recommended safety tips included keeping the barbecue at least 60 cm away from doors and windows and to always light your barbecue with the cover open.
