Bill and June Neilson feel like they’re dreaming.
Someone has offered them tickets to a sold-out Tragically Hip concert after Global’s story about Bill Neilson’s connection with frontman Gord Downie.
“He’s loved by a lot of people, and the whole band you know, sorry,” said Neilson on Wednesday, pausing to wipe away tears.
“It’s a big thing, because I know what I went through when I had a brain tumour. The surgery that goes with it is scary as hell.”
The song “Courage” speaks volumes to Neilson.
He said he just wanted to express his admiration for Downie, and now he and his wife are going to next Friday’s show in Toronto, thanks to a couple who want to remain anonymous.
“That is so unselfish, so unselfish that someone would do that,” said Neilson on Thursday.
“If my heart could actually grow any bigger it did because it is so wonderful. People are so selfless to help others,” added his wife.
The person giving the Neilsons the tickets sent along a note which Global News shared with them.
“When I heard why Bill loved the Tragically Hip there was nothing else I wanted to do but give him our tickets,” wrote the woman.
“Music helps people get through hard times, makes people happy, brings people together,” she explained.
“Wow. It’s so true. Music has gotten us through so many things together,” responded June Neilson.

Her husband has gone through six surgeries and lost much of his eyesight.
“I hope the concert makes him smile and brings him happiness,” continued the note from the anonymous ticket donor.
June Neilson said they have always tried to help others.
“It’s hard for us to be on the receiving line of someone doing something so nice,” she said, explaining they are usually the ones helping others.
Bill Neilson’s message to the couple who is giving them their tickets is this:
“I love you, thank you very much.”
They said they will cherish seeing The Hip, one last time.
In gratitude for the tickets they promise to dance harder and sing louder at the concert than ever before.
