Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joins thousands at Vancouver Pride Parade

Justin Trudeau was front and centre at the Vancouver Pride Parade this Sunday, becoming the first sitting Prime Minster to march in the annual parade.

He joined the tens of thousands of people on the streets of Downtown Vancouver to celebrate the LGBTQ community.

“It’s such a pleasure to be here,” Trudeau said.

“We celebrate the great diversity that is such a strength of our country. We celebrate community, we celebrate family, and all these things together means that we are going to have a great pride.”

Just a few weeks ago he set a similar precedent in Toronto by marching in their Pride Parade.

A sea of colorful floats and signs flooded the streets of Downtown Vancouver.

People walked around the parade handing out messages like “You are loved.

Some took a moment to remember the victims of the Orlando shooting, which saw 49 people killed in a gay nightclub, by carrying pictures of the victims to honour them.

Global News’ Steve Darling said this year’s event is unlike anything he’s ever seen.

“I’ve been to the parade, this might be my eighth or ninth time now, but there’s a lot more people here this year than I’ve ever seen before.”

The theme of this year’s Pride week focused on the power of working in unity to create change.
