N’sabi, one of three gorillas from the African western lowlands residing at Granby Zoo, just east of Montreal, died on Thursday night.

The Granby Zoo veterinary team is performing an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

N’sabi’s health deteriorated in the past few days and was treated with antibiotics, according to a press release from the zoo.

Officials did not explain what lead to his health issues.

The 21-year-old gorilla was moved into an isolated area to rest and was under constant surveillance, just before he died.

N’sabi was born in 1995 at the Calgary Zoo, and came to the Granby Zoo in 2006 with his step-brothers, Jawara and Zwalani.
