“If you think about it, there’s very few people [who] don’t have some kind of Scottish blood running through their veins,” John Martin of the Saint Andrew’s Society of Saint John said .

Established in 1798, the Port City’s Saint Andrew’s Society is Canada’s oldest while the Fredericton chapter was the next one to be formed.

Their mandate is to maintain and promote Scottish culture through events such as the Highland Games.

“Every ethnic group needs to recognize who they are and what they come from,” Martin said. “It’s extremely important for all groups to have a chance to celebrate where we come from.”

Heavy events such as the hammer throw and caber toss were contested by amateurs and professionals alike while youths took part in traditional Scottish dancing as well.

Workshops, authentic cuisine and more gave the Scot in all of us a chance to enjoy their favourite parts of Celtic culture but many say the opening ceremony complete with parade topped their list.

“When you see the mass pipe,” Saint Andrew’s Society member George McCarthy said of his choice for most exciting part of the weekend. “As kids we used to follow them for five or six miles and try to find our way home again after it.”

“When I see the drums and the bands coming forward it literally just moved my heart,” newly-appointed New Brunswick Celtic Affairs Minister Lisa Harris said. “You look around and you see how many people are here to celebrate the Scottish heritage today, I mean it’s beautiful.”

The Highland Games kicked off Friday night and continue through to Sunday.
