It’s a story South Carolina’s Rock Hill Police Department has never heard before: a man asking an eight-year-old boy to pee in a cup for a drug test.

The unidentified man in his 30s was at New Beginnings Child Care Center – the daycare his mother worked at – when he and his mother allegedly woke the boy up from his nap. The man then asked the boy to urinate in a medicine bottle.

The child had gone home and told his mother what happened. She then contacted the daycare and confronted the woman, who allegedly admitted to the incident.

The mother of the eight-year-old boy then contacted police.

According to Capt. Mark Bollinger of the Rock Hill Police Department, the mother and son have not broken any laws that they know of at the moment.

“We’re not sure if any laws were broken – this is definitely a strange story,” Bollinger said during a phone interview with Global News. “We have one or two things we are looking over with a solicitor and reviewing South Carolina laws.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

As of now, Bollinger said no charges have been laid.

“We’ve never heard of this before…there’s lots of research going on and investigators are still looking into it,” he said.

Bollinger also mentioned the possible motive behind asking the boy to pee in the cup was to pass a urine screening.

“[The unidentified man] was recently released from jail and was applying for jobs,” Bollinger said. “He needed a clean pee test.”

As of Wednesday, Bollinger said the daycare worker was still at the centre but it’s not known if the child still attends.

Bollinger also said the daycare is investigating its policies.
