Jukka Laurio had his business license cancelled on Tuesday. The very next morning, it was business as usual.

Despite the lack of permit, Laurio vows he’ll stay open for his more than 3,000 customers.

“If I just shut right down, there’s no place for a few thousand people to go,” he said.

Despite city council deciding to revoke Laurio’s business license, it did vote to direct staff to investigate how other municipalities are  regulating medical marijuana businesses.

For Laurio, that’s a small victory.

“If we shut down and go away, they’re not going to do a thing,” he said.

City spokesperson Tina Lee said Laurio could face a daily fine of $250 for each day he is open without a business license.

Lee said staff are working out an enforcement strategy and may consider seeking an injunction.
