Inmate found unresponsive at Saskatchewan Penitentiary later pronounced dead

An inmate at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary’s medium security unit has died, according to Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

Joseph Vincent Manitopyes, 31, was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday.

He was taken to Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert and pronounced dead at around 10:35 p.m. CT.

Manitopyes was serving a sentence for attempted robbery, four counts of disguise with intent, four counts of robbery and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

He began serving a five year and seven month sentence in June 2014.

Police and the coroner have been notified.

CSC will review the circumstances of the Manitopyes’ death.
