Quebec Solidaire co-leader Amir Khadir wins Mercier

Amir Khadir, co-leader of Quebec Solidaire, has held the riding of Mercier.

He defeated PQ candidate Jean Poirier with 46 per cent of the vote to Poirier’s 25 per cent, with 15 out of 128 polls reporting.

Khadir first won the riding in 2008 and was the only MNA for Quebec Solidaire.

His support for the recent student movement was widely publicized and he openly encouraged Quebecers to disobey Bill 78, which placed restrictions on protests in the province.

Both Khadir and his daughter were arrested at various points during the protests. Police even found a piece of artwork in his home that depicted him standing over a dead Jean Charest.
