Tue, Jul 12: Rescued from Crescent beach on July 8, the seal pup, now named Lou-Seal, is being taken care of by the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre – Jul 12, 2016

An emaciated seal pup is on the mend after being rescued from Crescent Beach on July 8.

The seal pup, now known as Lou-Seal, was first found by nearby residents, who then reached out to the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre for help.

Little Lou-Seal was immediately admitted to the centre due to her low body weight and an injury to her right eye. Once she was in the rescue centre, staff found another wound under her eye.

Aquarium staff says although she is very small, she is putting on weight and in turn, starting to get more energy. And along with the weight gain, Lou-Seal is receiving treatment for her eye injury.

Currently the seal pup is all about the formula but once her teeth have come through aquarium staff says they will switch to a menu of herring.

While most seal pup patients spend roughly two months at the rescue centre before they are returned to the wild, aquarium staff says it depends on their speed of recovery.

The aquarium rescues, rehabilitates and releases more than 100 animals a year, and last year the team rescued 145 animals.

Although it is tempting to touch a stranded or injured animal, the rescue centre advises to not approach it, keep pets away and call the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre at 604-258-7325 for immediate assistance.
