Thousands of cyclists take to the highways of the south Okanagan

PENTICTON – There will likely be more bicyclists than motorists on some stretches of south Okanagan highway this Sunday.

As many as 2500 people are expected to take part in the sixth annual Prospera Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan bicycle ride.

The route starts in Penticton and goes through Summerland, OK Falls, Oliver and Kaleden.

The riders are aged from 14 to 88 years and include participants from Europe and the Bahamas.

Notable participants include Vancouver Canucks president Trevor Linden, former Ironman World Champion Peter Reid and Canadian Olympic legend Silken Laumann.

Granfondo riders can chose four distances from 55 to160 kilometres.

Some of the money raised from the event goes to Canuck Place children’s hospice in Vancouver.

The event includes an outdoor yoga and movie night at Gyro Park starting at 7:00 p.m. Friday.
