Ice Ice Baby: Rogers Place reaches another milestone

With just a few months to go until the grand opening of Rogers Place, Edmonton’s downtown arena now has an ice surface.

Rogers Place tweeted a picture of the brand new ice Thursday morning, marking another milestone in the journey to open the much-anticipated facility.

Crews were working on a test sheet of ice, about half the height of a normal NHL sheet. They’ve been busy testing the cooling systems in the ice slab for the past couple of weeks.

It comes just days after the Rogers Place letters were installed on the outside of the arena.

Rogers Place will open in September, with the Edmonton Oilers playing their first NHL pre-season game at the arena on Sept. 26 against the Calgary Flames.

The Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings will also call Rogers Place home. The team will play their first game at the downtown arena on Sept. 24.
