Daycare operators in Saskatchewan are lobbying for consistency in how property tax rates are applied.

Some daycares within schools are exempt from paying, others are charged residential rates and some others are classified as commercial, where property taxes can run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Colleen Schmidt of Regina’s Cathedral-area Cooperative Daycare says it makes sense for daycares — which are exclusively non-profit in Saskatchewan — to be taxed like a school rather than like Walmart.

Recent reassessments in some cities have seen daycares face property tax increases of more than seven thousand dollars, which Schmidt says could drive up fees or possibly force some centres to close down.
