Mississauga’s 18 public libraries will be closed to the public on July 4 after the union representing library employees and the city both failed to reach a labour agreement.
CUPE Local 1989 of the Mississauga Library Workers Union said it’s members have been on strike since 12:01 midnight.
The city said all branches will be closed until further notice, however late fees will be waived and certain online services will still be operational.
The public can still have access to eBooks, eAudioBooks, eResources, eMagazines and free music. Library members can also renew items online and view the catalogue.
The library union has been in contract negotiations with the city since June 12, 2015 and some of the contentious issues include wages, work instability and hours, as well as benefits.
